Start with a finish, not a record

Use the Play Swervle button on the play page to open the original game. Keep this guide open while you race in a separate window or tab. Use the game’s own start controls. On your first attempt, concentrate on learning the route and reaching the finish rather than forcing every corner.

The important distinction

R is recovery: it puts you back at a checkpoint while the clock continues. F or Backspace is a restart. Do not use recovery when you intended to begin a fresh timed attempt.

Swervle controls

The keyboard mappings below come from the official how-to-play page, reviewed September 29, 2026. The original in-game help takes priority if controls change.

InputWhat it does
W A S D / Arrow keysDriveClick or tap inside the game first.
SpaceHandbrakeUse it deliberately; a bigger slide is not always a faster corner.
RReturn to checkpointThe race timer keeps running. This is not a fresh attempt.
F / BackspaceRestart the runUse this when you want another attempt from the start.
CChange cameraChoose the view that makes the next corner easiest to read.
GToggle ghostsShow or hide other racers’ replay cars.
EscMenu and leaderboardOpen the in-game menu, results and settings.

Playing on a phone

Use the controls displayed inside the game, not the keyboard labels on this website. Landscape orientation gives you a wider view. The original game opens at the top level of your browser, giving its touch controls the full window. Some browsers open a tab rather than a separate game window.

Learn from a ghost

The official guide explains that selecting a racer on the leaderboard lets you race their ghost. Ghosts do not collide with your car. Use G to hide them when you need a clearer view, then bring them back to compare a specific part of the route.

Read the surface before the corner

Swervle changes grip with the surface: ice is slippery and dirt is loose. Avoid assuming the steering response will feel the same across the whole course. The official guide also describes ramp and reverse boosts; explore these once you can finish a consistent run.

A simple practice routine

Finish one scouting attempt. Pick one corner or landing to work on. Repeat the same approach a few times, changing just one input. Keep the change only when it improves the run reliably. The manual practice log can help you remember what you tried; it does not read the game.
